Visual Literacy Blog 1

I took a picture of a small chapel at Marquette University that was built in honor of Joan of Arc. I would always walk about on the area of the campus to discover the various buildings the students would go to attend classes. I would look at the chapel like a big doll house just there for show. Then one day. a month ago I saw someone walk in. It never cross my mind to see if I could open the door. I went inside and found chairs and benches where people can pray or just sit and be quiet.

I could the warm of the chapel and I liked the quiet because I could sit and think. I was able to  clear my head of most of the clutter that I had at the time. I looked at the candles and the stain glass windows that brought a sense of colorful joy to the space. Every now and then I go in ,after 10am, and try to find something to focus on and just open my mind to something new to appreciate. After watching the TED TALK I have learned to look at things beyond face value and try to find some meaning." Visual Literacy is the ability to construct meaning from images."

*I did take a picture of the chapel with my phone , but was not able to upload the picture. I had the picture in my Instagram account under wondarawherry.

This may sound weird ,but I can't think of a Joshua Tree Epiphany. I know I can't think of anything recent. The closet thing I can think of was a plant that was in my mom's garden. My mother loved to work in her garden. She planted greens, mustards, and collar greens. When she died people asked me if I would keep her garden up. I 'm not a gardener. That was my mom's  thing. Then one day  my aunt asked if I still had the "pork salad. " I was like the what ???!!. The pork salad was some type of plant that was like greens, but I never paid attention to it. When my aunt showed it to me it looked like a weed. To this day I still couldn't tell you want it looked like because I blocked it out of my mind. Friends and relatives would come by during the summer to see if grew back. I just let them look for it because they would find it faster than I would.

As I have said before in earlier blogs I want to grow and be a more balanced person. I have been having trouble when it comes to stress. I'm running around trying to figure out how to be everything to everybody. There have been when I go to a quiet spot and just scream my head off  because it gets to be to much. So I came across this vlog by health advocate Kris Carr. My morning routine has been getting up, bath, get dress and out the door. I sometimes forget breakfast because I'm too busy wanting to get the day over with. I came across Carr's vlog when I was  trying to find her segment on Supersoul Sunday on YouTube. Vlog #1 is about how she starts her day.

This is a picture for September 1 blog post

Thursday, September 1, 2016

This post will be about my focus of my blog. My blog will be about growth. When I say growth I mean being more content with my self. I have been ignoring my personal needs for a long time and I'm just tired. There are days when I don't want to get out of bed or I walk around just empty and spiritually lost. I was taught that thinking about my needs was being selfish and was made to feel ashamed. So I kept my feelings to my self and I just ate, and stopped working out, and kept to myself. The result is a woman in her forties who sometimes doesn't like to look at herself in the mirror. I've been trying to figure out how I let this happen. I would say LIFE. I had a child and later discovered she has autism. My mom died and now I care for my older sister because she has the mind of a child. I'm stressed most of the time because I feel pulled in all kinds of directions because certain people in my life don't care about me; they want me to be someone else. Well. change starts today. I need to get off the ferris wheel and get back to some sanity. One day at a time. I just need to to figure out where to start.

                                             THE CHARM

                                                               THE CHARM
In a small town  there was a family of three named the Depasse. John Depasse was a shopkeeper of the town store that was left for him when his father passed away earlier in the year. He had worked in the shop growing up as a young boy. His wife Gail was a piano teacher and taught young people in the family home so she could spend more time with their only child Jess. Jess was sweet and  yet  a quite child. She would often play by herself during playtime at school. Jess was shy, but once she opened up she was a delightful child who liked to draw and write stories.

When Jess turned ten, as a birthday gift, her Mother gave her a charm that she received on her tenth birthday. It was a charm of a flower. It was  color of gold with specks of yellow and pink. Jess was a bit disappointed because she was hoping for a bike. She looked at her mother and said "Oh thank you mother its beautiful." Jess took the charm and put it on her bare bracelet."That  charm is very special. You take good care of it." says Gail. Sadly, a few days later Gail passed away in her sleep. She had never been sick a day in her life. Jess and her father were in shock and sad. Jess one night looked up at the night sky and with her tears in her eyes and said, "I"ll always love you".

About a few months later Gail's sister Loy came for a visit to see how the he and Jess were doing since her death. "We're doing ok. One day at a time." says John. "It must be hard rising a young girl without her mother. If you like I could move to town and help out." says Loy. "That would be nice." says John. Jess didn't know much about her aunt Loy. Loy was the black sheep of the family. She was a widow twice. She liked to have the finer things in life. Nice clothes, jewelry, and homes. She didn't have any children. The rumor was that she disliked children so much she would pass out castor oil for Halloween. Gail didn't talk much about  her sister because they didn't always get along. Loy was jealous about Gail receiving the charm. Loy felt the charm should  go to her because she was the oldest.  But their mother had good reason as to why Gail got the charm.

After a few months passed Jess noticed that a garden had grown in the back yard. There were yellow and pink roses. Most of the roses grew under the window of Jess's bedroom. Jess asked her father "When did you plant flower seeds father." "I didn't ."her father said. Jess thought maybe her aunt Loy may have planted the flowers during a visit but Jess knew that "act of kindness would be out of character for her. Loy would come by and check on them ,but she really didn't help much. She had bought her maid with her to do the cooking and cleaning. Jess had come home from school once and Loy was looking for something in a box marked Gail. The box had all of Gail's personal items. Jess surprised her saying "What are you looking for?" Loy said, "Your mother had this charm when we  were little ,but I can't find it. It was a flower charm." When Loy turned around to face Jess she noticed the charm on her bracelet. "My charm!" shouted Loy. Jess took two steps back and said, "Mother gave the charm to me for my birthday." Loy lunged at Jess as if to grab her, but she managed to get away . Jess ran out of the house and passed the garden of flowers with Loy right behind her. Jess tripped and fell. As Loy reached down  to grab the bracelet, a shadow emerged from the garden and spoke, " The charm  was given to me to one day give to my daughter." Loy stood back in disbelief .She the voice of the shadow was that of her sister Gail. Loy  and Jess were both speechless. Loy ran away  and left to return to her home outside of town. The shadow disappeared back into the soil of the garden. Jess tried to get the shadow to return, but it didn't.

Later that day Loy's maid came by the house, after staying behind to gather Loy's things, to say goodbye.  Jess asked the maid about why aunt Loy wanted the charm so bad. " Loy thought the charm was worth money." says the maid  "However, the charm isn't worth much. Your grandmother  found the charm in the rose garden by her bedroom window when her mother died." Jess asked the maid if her grandmother planted the garden. "No, said the maid , according to your aunt the roses just appeared out of nowhere." The maid turned around a gave Jess a wink
